This week, I came across a photograph from the dark times when Belgium’s King Leopold II ruled over the Congo. It shows a young man on a porch, staring at a tiny foot and a tiny hand that just lie there – his daughter’s, cut of by his oppressors because he didn’t meet his work quota (I’d rather not link to it, it’s horrific). Still today, black people are losing their limbs to systemic racism: an investigation by Pro Publica into «The Black American Amputation Epidemic».
