A marvellous installation at Guggenheim museum: Hitler, pinocchio, an elephant in a burka and much more, all hanging from the roof.
I’m pretty sure you’ve come across one of his paintings. And I’m also pretty sure you didn’t realise that Jorge Colombo creates them on an iPhone. Looking at Colombo’s pictures, with their intense colours, capturing at the same time the melancholy and the beauty of big cities, I can’t resist imagining Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks being painted like this today.
In one of my earlier Weekly Filets, I had recommended Google’s Art Project, a virtual way to visit some of the world’s most renowned museums. Adobe takes it one step further with a museum that is entirely virtual in the first place. They had architects and designers actually create a building, a virtual one, that will from now be home to various exhibitions on digital media and digital art. Worth a visit, admission is free, no queues.
I guess you always wondered. Now you know. Love these drawings.
A wonderful poster series, reducing philosophical concepts to basic shapes.
A fascinating sculpture constructed from polystyrene blocks.
On June 9, Google turned its logo into a playable guitar, the latest highlight in their long history of themed logos. Here’s the complete history – well worth a look.
Make no mistake, I’m telling you to go to Paris just to see one piece of art. It’s one heck of a piece, though. Both in size and effect. Famed Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor has filled the Grand Palais with a gigantic bubble-ish object meant “to create an aesthetic and physical shock, an experience of colour that is simultaneously poetic, thoughtful and formidable”. It’s called Leviathan, which represented a monster in mythology and the state in Hobbes’ philosophy – to me it’s quite simply the most impressive piece of art I’ve ever encountered. Leviathan is exhibited until June 23, so hurry up or regret. I’m serious.
This is a must read for anyone who – in a broad sense – creates. To create meaning: turning ideas into reality. Austin Kleon, who made himself known for his brilliant Newspaper Blackout Poems, is providing us with a list, that he claims is essentially “me talking to a previous version of myself”. 10 things he wished he knew when we was younger. My favourite: “Fake it ‘til you make it”. I gladly repeat myself: this is a must read.
Make sense of what matters, today and for the future.
