Block 90 minutes of your weekend, now. HBO, known for their award-winning documentaries, have turned the eruption of the 2008 financial crisis into the obvious: a thriller – or, as you might want to call it, a thrillumentary. Based on the book by New York Times writer Andrew Sorkin, “Too Big To Fail”, they recap the dramatic events before and right after the collapse of investment bank Lehman Brothers. A captivating story of big money, bigger egos and looming disaster. The film is not officially available yet – so I’m pointing you to the extended 18-minute trailer – but I’m sure you can think of ways to watch the entire film.
Ideas come from the unconscious, says someone who knows: John Cleese of Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, you name it.
A must watch: Impressive and absolutely beautiful short documentary on the making of hand-crafted top end hourglasses in Basel.
This Wednesday, British war photographer Tim Hetherington was killed in Misurata, Libya. He was one of the best, having won a World Press Photo Award and being nominated for an Oscar for his documentary film “Restrepo”. He was one of the bravest, too, having covered some of the worst conflict regions in the world. I met him once for an interview three years ago. An inspiring journalist and a fine man, neither cynical nor proud of his courage. I remember him saying: “I don’t really care about photography. It’s my means to make people talk about things that happen in the world.” He died in besieged Libya, trying to find yet another image that will make people talk. May his images subsist.
He looks like Jesus and skates like his father. Don’t be fooled by the somewhat boring-ish first 30 seconds.
Beautiful and insightful short documentary on how Venice manages to stay on top of the water.
With one “social media revolution” chasing the next one, it’s a pressing question to ask: Is it all good or what’s the downside? Thorough in content, utterly brilliant in visualisation.
An interesting four-part documentary series about the future of mobility, moving from ownership to access. And yes, Google’s self-driving cars are in there, too.
Make sense of what’s happening, and imagine what could be.
